This page covers my opinion of Laurence Godfrey and is (mostly) satire. I post it knowing full well he will threaten to sue me, DHP.com, the admins here, their mothers, my neighbor's dog and anyone that thinks bad thoughts about him.

It is abundantly clear that Godfrey and other well known net kooks are consorting. Birds of a feather and all that..

For those unfamiliar with this windbag, do a search on Google for his name and you will see he has a long history of threatening lawsuits. You can also find him listed in the Net.Legends.FAQ which warns usenet posters of well known kooks. Because of his one visible past victory in a case against Demon Internet, he now feels he has free reign to threaten litigation anytime he doesn't like your comments. There have been two other victories that appear to be token, simply to shut him up. For a great read, there is a Slashdot thread about his past as well.

If you make a post on usenet or create a web page, Godfrey's typical M.O is to threaten you with a lawsuit. If you do not cave in and either remove the material or post a public apology, he will then begin an amazing campaign of harassment against you and your ISP in an attempt to scare them into removing the content. Many companies simply don't want to pay legal costs to prove him wrong, so they foolishly censor their users instead. Most ISP's simply do not care about your right to free speech. They are in the business to make money, and throwing it away defending claims from pompous windbags isn't condusive to profit.

Like our good friend Ron Jeremy, Laurence Godfrey likes to fuck too. Instead of fucking girls like most guys like to do, Godfrey instead likes to fuck you and your ISP, as well as your right to free speech.

If you take the time to read through various newsgroups that Godfrey frequents, you will see a clever and subtle pattern of baiting people into arguments. Once he goads you into flaming him, he cries havoc and lets slip the dogs of litigation. It doesn't matter if you post nothing libelous, that seemingly is the only legal trick he knows. If you want to avoid further threats and harassment, simply post an apology saying you were completely wrong in calling him names or implying that he is an unethical toad that abuses the legal system, or whatever else you may have said.

In some cases, even asking him four questions is enough to spur him into a legal threat frenzy. This recently came to light when Godfrey harassed attrition.org over a forged usenet post. As you can read from the amusing thread, even if Godfrey knows you didn't post the material in question, he will continue his threats and harassment if you don't silently drop the issue and move on.

Godfrey is not a lawyer! Despite this, he will threaten to sue any chance he gets. In fact, if he got laid every time he threatened to sue, Ron Jeremy would worship this net kook. Why does he think he knows anything about the law? Back in 1983, for a year he did volunteer work at a Legal Advice Center at a campus of the State University of New York, advising consumers about their rights. Oh yes, that clearly makes him an expert on Internet and libel law. Reading about him, you may keep seeing mention that he is a Physicist of some kind, but you will clearly see he spends more time threatening people than practicing or lecturing physics.

According to some, Godfrey was not well liked at one employer and terminated. Godfrey denies this in the midst of various threats of lawsuit against those who say differently. This is only one spot on his checkered history and begins to give one insight as to the type of character he is. As I wrote this, I was directed to another person who has received his share of net kook harassment including Godfrey (stalkedbyseth.com/). The amount of flame wars and poor opinions of Godfrey, his past, and his current actions is incredible. The fact that he continues to harass and threaten various people without attempting to go to the source of the supposed libel speaks to his true motive. After a little digging, I found an interesting usenet post with amusing quotes from the pompous twit.

Libel is defined as a) A false publication, as in writing, print, signs, or pictures, that damages a person's reputation and b) The act of presenting such material to the public. The key word here is FALSE. Because of this, many people are able to keep up negative opinions and pages that expose Godfrey and he is helpless to do anything about it. As I said before, the material on this page is my opinion and states no fact about Godfrey. Just because I think he is a litigation happy self loathing gimp doesn't mean you should. This page was put up to warn net users of a new breed of evil that threatens everyone using the Internet. If we continue to let them tramp all over personal rights, the net will become worse than closed societies that do not let their citizens voice opinion. People will live in fear of accidentally saying the wrong thing or miswording something, only to have it lumped into a blanket category of "libel", all because a handful of individuals use it to stifle their critics and try to make a fast buck.
